Jill & Michael Coates

Jill & Michael Coates

Walking through the verdant bush surrounding Tanonga Eco Lodges near Port Lincoln, it is hard to believe the area was devastated by a major bushfire just five years ago. Owners Jill and Michael Coates were separated on the day of the inferno in January 2005, with Michael working in the 40 degree heat to save the couple's house while school principal Jill was safeguarding her students. Although Michael managed to save the house, much of the property was burnt, including thousands of native plants painstakingly planted in the previous months. However, the couple refused to let this setback faze them, replanting the property and building the two luxury eco-lodges that now offer visitors a secluded break from city life.
