Tourism Excellence Honoured at Australian Tourism Awards

The Australian War Memorial in the ACT, Hayman in Queensland and Anangu Tours in the NT have been inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame at the 2002-2003 Australian Tourism Awards, announced tonight in Adelaide.

Overall, Queensland took out eight awards, followed by the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia on five, Victoria three, Western Australia and the Northern Territory two, and one apiece to New South Wales and Tasmania.

Federal Tourism Minister Joe Hockey says the Australian Tourism Awards recognise and promote excellence in tourism, rewarding operators who constantly strive to meet the highest standards in customer service and product development.

"Tonight is a celebration of the nation's diverse tourism industry, which now employs 551,000 Australians and generates about $71.2 billion of expenditure annually," Minister Hockey says.
"The awards allow us to recognise achievements in tourism, after what could only be described as a testing 18 months for the industry. Tourism is vital for Australia's continued economic growth and in particular for sustaining regional communities who now more than ever will rely on much needed income from tourism."

Almost 800 tourism operators and industry leaders attended the black-tie presentation and gala dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre for a taste of the finest South Australian food, wine, art and culture.

The Australian War Memorial, Hayman and Anangu Tours gained entry to the Hall of Fame after winning their respective Major Tourist Attractions, Luxury Accommodation and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Tourism categories for three consecutive years.

Other winners included Longitude 131 (NT) for New Tourism Development and the Monet & Japan exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia (ACT) for Major Festivals and Events. In its inaugural year, the Backpacker Accommodation category was won by the Glenelg Beach Resort (SA).

Two tourism operators - Nullarbor Traveller (SA) and Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa (Qld) - won in two categories.

Finalists in the Australian Tourism Awards must first win at State and Territory level, with more than 1000 operators taking part in the judging process across the country.

A complete review has occurred since the Australian Tourism Awards were last announced in Tasmania in November 2001. Measures include a move to a financial-year basis to suit most business practices, the new Backpacker Accommodation category and a clearer definition of all categories.
