Accommodation boost for Limestone Coast

19 September 2012

A major grant will support growth in luxury accommodation on South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

The Barn in Mount Gambier has been allocated $105,000 through the South Australian Tourism Commission’s (SATC) Tourism Development Fund (TDF).

Funding will support the development of 14 premium suites, a project that will take The Barn’s total number of rooms to 45.

Minister for Tourism Gail Gago said the grant would help boost Limestone Coast visitor numbers.

“The Barn offers high-quality, spacious rooms that have earned an excellent reputation,” Minister Gago said.

“New suites supported by this TDF grant will help South Australia reach its targets for domestic high-yield travellers, while also offering the important Asian market a luxury regional experience.”

The Limestone Coast Destination Action Plan 2012-15 was launched in June and recommends that 115 new 4-star+ rooms be built to cater for increased visitor demand.

Minister Gago said The Barn’s new suites would help the SATC achieve its goal of increasing visitor expenditure within South Australia’s total tourism industry to $8 billion by 2020.

“Additional accommodation also delivers a significant boost to the Limestone Coast economy in the form of staff salaries,” Minister Gago said.

The Barn owner Kent Comley said he and colleagues were extremely appreciative of the TDF grant.

“The grant has enabled us to utilise only the highest quality fittings and fixtures in the new suites, which will further enhance the visitor experience, and provided us with the confidence to continue to market the property towards the important ‘indulger’ market from interstate and overseas,” Mr Comley said.

Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast tourism development officer Biddie Tietz also welcomed the funding. “This funding allocation is a real coup for the region and for The Barn, who will now cement their position as a premium accommodation provider in our region with increased potential to attract that high-yielding traveller,” Ms Tietz said.
