Adelaide wins bid to host world's best duathletes

24 October 2012

Minister for Tourism Gail Gago today announced that the South Australian Tourism Commission, through Events South Australia and in conjunction with Triathlon Australia, had been successful in its bid to host the event for the first time.

“Hosting this event for the first time is a real win for Adelaide as it is expected to involve more than 1700 athletes and over 2000 accompanying supporters from 35 nations visiting SA,” Minister Gago said.

“We also anticipate the Duathlon World Championships will inject at least $3 million into the local economy.”

Duathlon is a challenging athletic event similar to triathlon that involves two running legs separated by a cycling stint.

“Adelaide has a strong international reputation as the home of world-class events and festivals, and we look forward to welcoming the Duathlon World Championships to the city in 2015,” Minister Gago said.

“About 75 per cent of this event’s athletes and supporters will be from interstate or overseas, presenting an exciting opportunity to promote all South Australia has to offer as a tourism destination.”

The ITU Duathlon World Championships attract elite male and female duathletes, who race for more than $100,000 in prize money.

Minister Gago said Adelaide would host the event in spring of 2015, with the proposed course to take in city highlights.

“Duathletes are set to explore our vibrant city and will compete around the Riverbank precinct, Montefiore Hill and North Adelaide,” Minister Gago said.

Triathlon Australia CEO Anne Gripper said athletes could look forward to a warm welcome in South Australia, while locals would enjoy top-calibre competition.

“The awarding of the 2015 Duathlon World Championships to Adelaide is testament to the reputation of Events South Australia as an excellent host of major sporting events,” Ms Gripper said.

“We look forward to working closely with the organising committee to make this a wonderful event for Australian and international competitors, and their supporters.”
