Braden to shine with his cycling heroes

An inspirational Bupa Challenge Tour participant will go for the ride of his life today when he heads out for training with ORICA-GreenEDGE.

Adelaide’s Braden O’Shea is taking part in Cancer Council SA’s Ride for a Reason campaign and raising money to beat cancer.

The 13-year-old set a target of $6000 and has so far received $6527 from generous donors.

Braden, a keen cyclist who will ride 127 kilometres in the Bupa Challenge Tour, has been invited to join ORICA-GreenEDGE on their first training ride for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under.

Orica-GreenEDGE Team Director Matt Wilson, himself a cancer survivor, said he was pleased to invite Braden to head out with the team.

This year will be the third time Braden has ‘ridden for a reason’ as part of the Bupa Challenge Tour. He is riding in honour of his late aunt Leanne, who succumbed to cancer.

“(My aunt) was a fighter, and I can continue her wish and everyone’s wish that has been touched by cancer, and that is to help find a cure,” Braden said.

“Help me make a difference and stand strong, and let’s unite in the fight against cancer.”

The amount of money Braden has raised for Cancer Council SA presently stands at $15,527, with $2000 raised in 2011 and $7000 last year.

Matt Wilson, who raced as a professional cyclist between 2001 and 2012, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1999 and moved back to Australia for treatment.

After successful cancer treatment he began racing again, and in 2004 won the elite men’s road race at the Australian Championships.

ORICA-GreenEDGE’s team for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under includes defending champion Simon Gerrans and young gun Luke Durbridge, who recently won the time trial and road race at the National Championships.
