A free four day event trail along the North Terrace precinct will celebrate 80 years of the Credit Union Christmas Pageant in South Australia, Tourism Minister Gail Gago announced today.
Running from 4 – 7 October, the trail will follow a route along North Terrace and pass through the Library of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Migration Museum and showcase the Pageant’s history along the way.
“While the Pageant has evolved since the first event in 1933, one thing remains the same – its ability to bring young and old South Australians together to celebrate the beginning of the festive season,” Ms Gago said.
“The stories behind the Pageant have earned their page in South Australian history. The value to the South Australian community and the goodwill it generates is so significant it cannot be measured.
“At each of the sites there will be something to celebrate the Pageant including old Pageant video footage, colourful float designs, costumes and props, Pageant entertainers, bands, dance groups, face painters and costume workshops.
“There will also be an eighty metre ‘paint by numbers’ canvas depicting Credit Union Christmas Pageant Day for the whole community to paint and a brand new Pageant float will also be unveiled,” she said.
Since 1933, millions of people have watched the event from the streets of Adelaide or on television.
Today the Minister will be joined by Event Director, Brian Gilbertson and Costa Anastasiou Chief Executive Officer, Police Credit Union, to put the first brush stroke on the 80 metre canvas.
Peter Evers, Chair, Credit Union Christmas Pageant Company, said the credit unions were once again looking forward to the event as they celebrate their 17th year of sponsorship.
“The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is more than just a one day event for us; it is a 365 day commitment. We are looking forward to celebrating the 80 year milestone with this new community celebration over four days in October,” Mr Evers said.
“The credit unions are very proud of their partnership with the South Australian Government and are looking forward to extending their partnership from the event day itself to present the trail experience.”
