The Credit Union Christmas Pageant has broken records, lifted spirits, heralds the start of the Christmas season and been attended by hundreds of thousands of South Australians over the years. This year, it celebrates ‘80 Years Young; It is Going to be BIG’!
Today, to officially commemorate 80 years since the first event in 1933, the FREE Credit Union Christmas Pageant Trail along the North Terrace precinct from 4 – 7 October was declared officially open.
The 2012 Credit Union Christmas Pageant was also officially launched with the unveiling of the new Circus float. This is the first time the event has staged such a public reveal ahead of the big day.
Brian Gilbertson, Creative Director and Event Manager led the official duties with a ribbon cutting ceremony held under the new Welcome Arch which will be used on Pageant Day.
“This community event will allow people to follow 21 sites through the State Library of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Migration Museum, exploring all of the Pageant magic of yesteryear and today,” said Brian Gilbertson.
At each of these sites there will be something to celebrate the Pageant including old Pageant video footage, colourful float designs, costumes and props, Pageant entertainers including the Royal Family, bands, dance groups, face painters, costume workshops and an 80 metre Community Art Wall canvas depicting Pageant Day for the whole community to paint.
See favourite floats and mini floats on display throughout the Trail: Story Book, Possum Magic, Fergus the North Pole Fire Engine, Bruto, Pogo, Kaurna Country Christmas, Mr Owly and Friends, Naughty or Nice Metre, Clarry the Clown, Nasty Neville and Toyville Trolley and Rodney the Red Bi-Plane. Bring your camera and head to Nimble’s Stable to have your photo taken on Nimble!
Peter Evers, Chair, Credit Union Christmas Pageant Company, said the credit unions were thrilled to throw their support behind the Credit Union Christmas Pageant Trail and were of course, once again looking forward to the event on 10 November 2012.
“The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is more than just a one day event for us; it is a 365 day commitment. We are looking forward to celebrating the 80 year milestone with this new community celebration over the next four days,” Mr Evers said.
“We encourage all South Australians to come down to the North Terrace precinct and celebrate with us and learn about the Pageant’s history and present. A free, fun family experience.”
All of the colour and excitement of Credit Union Christmas Pageant day was on display today with the launching of the new Circus float as part of official proceedings.
The Circus float will be full of thrills and hopefully not too many spills as it winds its way around the streets of Adelaide. Involving Adelaide’s youth circus program, Cirkidz, there will be performances on the float as well as surrounding it.
“Today we have seen just a sample of the live circus acts we will see on Pageant day including performers hanging from wires, jumping from pole to pole and weaving in and out of a circle suspended above the float. This is simply spectacular,” said Brian Gilbertson.
Sure to be an eye-catcher, Circus will appeal to the younger kids as well as a broader teenage audience as they are thrilled by the daring performances. This float has been designed by Kari Lindsay, who has been designing floats for the Pageant for three years.
The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government. The naming rights sponsors comprise four leading SA credit unions – People’s Choice Credit Union, Community CPS Australia, Credit Union SA and Police Credit Union.
The 2012 Credit Union Christmas Pageant Trail will be held along the North Terrace cultural precinct 4 –7 October 2012.
