Double win for 2012 Santos Tour Down Under

13 September 2012

The prestigious Australian Event Awards in Sydney have delivered a double win for the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under.

Events South Australia General Manager Hitaf Rasheed tonight announced that the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under had been named Best Sporting Event and Best Tourism Event.

“This is wonderful recognition for a cycling festival that continues to delight South Australians and visitors alike,” Ms Rasheed said.

“We know this is an event with enormous appeal and tonight’s success at the Australian Event Awards shows industry experts agree.”

The Santos Tour Down Under has now been named Best Tourism Event at the Australian Event Awards for four years running and Best Sporting Event for the first time.

“Securing the coveted title of Best Sporting Event reflects the Santos Tour Down Under’s national significance,” Ms Rasheed said.

“In 2012 the Santos Tour Down Under attracted a total of 760,600 spectators, with more than 36,100 cycling fans visiting South Australia specifically for the event.

“From January 20 to 27 next year we will be celebrating 15 years of the Tour in South Australia and I’m sure it will be an occasion to remember.”

A grass start and a new stage route from Mount Barker are among exciting additions for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under, which will again feature the Bupa Challenge Tour.

“A number of towns and suburbs will be hosting a stage start or finish for the first time and can expect significant economic benefits as a result,” Ms Rasheed said.

“I encourage South Australians to get out and enjoy the award-winning Santos Tour Down Under as it makes its way through Adelaide and some of our state’s most spectacular regions.”

Santos Chief Executive David Knox congratulated the State Government and Events South Australia on the Tour’s fourth year of being honoured at the awards.

“The Santos Tour Down Under is a world-class event attended by hundreds of thousands of people from across Australia and overseas, with a significant positive economic impact on the local economy,” Mr Knox said.

“Our announcement in January to extend our naming rights sponsorship until 2016 proves our dedication to the event that brings the state so much energy and vibrancy and showcases South Australia’s beautiful regions to a global audience.”

The 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be held from 20 – 27 January 2013.
