First stage of Santos Tour Down Under set to excite

22 January 2013

L'Oréal Men Expert Stage 1 of the 15th annual Santos Tour Down Under will kick off today,

with riders set to tackle the 135-kilometre race route from Prospect to Lobethal.

Thousands of spectators are expected to head to vantage points throughout suburban

Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills to see some of the world’s best cyclists compete in the first

stage of the first event on the UCI WorldTour calendar.

Today’s race follows the successful People’s Choice Classic event on Sunday, which saw

108,000 people line the streets around Rymill Park to see Lotto Belisol’s Andre Greipel take

the win.

International cycling champion Andy Schleck, current Road Race World Champion Philippe

Gilbert, Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen and Belgian talent Thomas de Gendt are among the

big names competing in this year’s Santos Tour Down Under.

Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said the first stage, from Prospect to Lobethal, marked the

beginning of a fantastic week of international cycling in South Australia.

“Prospect will once again host the start of the first stage with a series of exciting events, which

started with the 2013 Tourrific Prospect street party last night and will continue with its pre-race

entertainment this morning.

“The Santos Tour Down Under attracts spectators from across the globe and gives local

communities the chance to promote their many attractions and unique operators.

“This is also a fantastic opportunity to showcase South Australia and its spectacular

landscapes to an international audience through the event’s global broadcast.”

A new initiative, World Detours Down Under, was introduced for the 2013 Santos Tour Down

Under and encourages visitors to plan their time around the race.

Detours highlights around L'Oréal Men Expert Stage 1 include the RM Williams Outback

Heritage Museum in Prospect, and some of South Australia’s premium food and wine

experiences such as Houghton’s Glen Ewin Estate, the Lobethal Bierhaus and Woodside

Cheese Wrights.
