Gilbert, Schleck and Meares to star at Legends' Night Dinner

14 December 2012

Three of the biggest names in world cycling will be centre stage at the Legends’ Night Dinner during next year’s Santos Tour Down Under.

UCI Road Race World Champion Philippe Gilbert, 2010 Tour de France winner Andy Schleck and Australia’s golden girl of the track, Anna Meares, will become the latest in a distinguished group of riders to be honoured at the event.

Minister for Tourism Gail Gago said fans attending the Legends’ Night Dinner would be given a unique insight into three elite athletes and their accomplishments.

“We are delighted to be welcoming Philippe and Andy to Adelaide to compete in the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under, and their presence at the Legends’ Night Dinner is also very exciting,” Ms Gago said.

“These two men continue to lead the world cycling field and are sure to have captivating experiences to share with dinner guests.”

Anna Meares has had an outstanding year, taking home Olympic gold and honours in the Keirin and 500M Time Trial events at the UCI Track World Championships.

“Fans at the Legends’ Night Dinner will have the chance to hear first-hand her amazing story of winning Olympic gold in London,” Ms Gago said.

The Legends’ Night Dinner is a major part of the Santos Festival of Cycling, which also includes events such as the ŠKODA Breakaway Series and the Santos Best Dressed Town Competition.

It will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Saturday January 26 next year.

“One of the reasons the Santos Tour Down Under is loved by fans is because they have the chance to rub shoulders with their cycling heroes,” Ms Gago said.

“The Legends’ Night Dinner is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate cycling and the athletes who entertain and inspire us.”

Gilbert, who last took part in the Santos Tour Down Under in 2008, will compete as part of the BMC Racing Team.

Schleck, a RadioShack-Nissan team member, will be racing in Australia for the first time and is eager to make a strong start to the 2013 season.

“The Santos Tour Down Under will celebrate its 15th anniversary next year and there is certainly plenty to look forward to,” Ms Gago said.
