Last chance to register for Bupa Challenge Tour

14 January 2013

Recreational cyclists have just hours left to register for this year’s Bupa Challenge Tour on January 25, with registrations closing at 5pm today.

Events South Australia General Manager Hitaf Rasheed said the Bupa Challenge Tour offered cyclists a unique experience.

“Bupa Challenge Tour participants are set to ride the same route that top professionals from around the world will compete on hours later,” Ms Rasheed said.

“Cyclists of all abilities are invited to share the fun and be part of a special community event that’s also a great way to see some of South Australia’s most beautiful landscapes.”

This year there are four Bupa Challenge Tour distances to choose from: 127km (Modbury-Tanunda), 92km (Kersbrook-Tanunda), 46.5km (Mt Pleasant-Tanunda) and 20km (Nuriootpa-Tanunda).

The 20-kilometre Bupa Challenge Tour option is new for 2013 and was introduced with families and beginner cyclists in mind.

Riders taking part in the Bupa Challenge Tour will receive a distinctive jersey to wear during the ride.

On Sunday January 27 hundreds of young riders will take part in the Bupa mini tour for kids presented by UniSA.

Cycling fans also have until 5pm tonight to buy tickets to the Legends’ Night Dinner, which is part of the Santos Festival of Cycling and will be held on Saturday January 26.

Reigning UCI Road Race World Champion Philippe Gilbert, 2010 Tour de France winner Andy Schleck, five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault and Australian Olympic gold medallist Anna Meares will be interviewed on stage by renowned cycling commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen.

“The legends we’ll honour this year are among the biggest names in world cycling, and we look forward to hearing their stories of triumph first-hand,” Ms Rasheed said.

“Cycling fans shouldn’t miss this opportunity to rub shoulders with the four legends, learn what motivates them and how they’ve risen to the top.”

The Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 20-27 January 2013.
