Olympic cycling champion celebrated at Tour Down Under

26 September 2013

The most successful Olympic track cyclist of all time, Sir Chris Hoy, will be coming to South Australia next January.

The British legend will be honoured by fans at the Legends’ Night Dinner during the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under.

The champion Scotsman will share stories from his astounding career at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Saturday 25 January.

The 37-year-old, 11-time world champion and six-time Olympic gold medallist retired in April.

Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell, said Sir Chris’s achievements have inspired millions of people around the world.

“Sir Chris is a true star of cycling whose success saw the sport’s popularity skyrocket across Britain,” Mr Bignell said.

“It will be an honour to welcome this legend to South Australia as we celebrate another year of our much-loved race.”

The Legends’ Night Dinner is among the Santos Tour Down Under’s most popular associated events.

Other cycling greats to have been honoured in recent years include five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault, Australian Olympic legend Anna Meares, reigning world champion Philippe Gilbert and Belgian champion Eddy Merckx.

Sir Chris said he looked forward to visiting South Australia to watch the Tour and meet fans.

“I’m excited to be heading to the southern hemisphere’s largest cycling event – like millions of other people I’ve enjoyed it on television, but attending will be a real thrill,” Sir Chris said.

“Cycling has grown from a minority sport into one loved the world over. Events such as the Santos Tour Down Under have helped expand people’s understanding and support for cycling, and it’s great to have the chance to see the race for myself.”

Today’s announcement about Sir Chris Hoy being honoured coincides with the confirmation that the Legends’ Night Dinner will be presented by Nespresso as a new sponsor to the event.
