One Tree Hill local, Casey Van Heuven, 9, has taken out honours in the 2013 Credit Union Christmas Pageant Mini-Float Design Competition, beating a record 430 designs submitted by students of all ages from around South Australia.
The Pedare Christian College student’s winning design entry, Ringo – North Pole Hotline, has been made into a mini- float which was unveiled today and will appear in the Credit Union Christmas Pageant on 9 November 2013.
Pageant Director Brian Gilbertson congratulated Casey and all of the other students who entered the competition and said he was overwhelmed by the number of entries this year.
“Casey’s winning design conjures up an image of what a busy place the North Pole is and how adults can make a direct call to Father Christmas on his giant phone. The elves would be busy answering this hotline in the lead up to Christmas,” he said.
“The imagination of our youth is to be celebrated. This competition generates creativity as all designs have to be original and cannot include branded signage or copyrighted characters, such as cartoon characters, or themes from movies or musicals.”
The mini- float competition, which is held every two years, was open to individual students as well as class entries. A mini-float is a small mobile set that is light enough to be pushed or pulled along the Pageant route. This is the second time an individual entry has been triumphant.
Mr Peter Evers, Chair, Credit Union Pageant Company, said he was thrilled once again to see record entries in the Credit Union Christmas Pageant Mini-Float Design Competition – now in its fourth year.
Entries have steadily grown since the competition’s inception in 2007 and thanks must go to the teachers and caregivers who encourage the students to take the time to enter.
“The competition provides school children around the State with the chance to be a part of the magic of the Credit Union Christmas Pageant and is an exciting avenue for students, like Casey, to show off their creative talent.
“The Credit Unions congratulate all of the individual students and schools that entered this year. The standard of the entries and effort put into the designs were once again exceptional and made the judge’s decision extremely tough,” Mr Evers said.
Casey Van Heuven has been awarded the honour and privilege of having his design, Ringo – North Pole Hotline, built to appear in this year’s Pageant, $500 donated by the credit unions and a visit to Stardust Castle to preview the mini-float today.
Entries in the competition included drawings, models and paintings with fairytales and fantasy again among the most popular themes this year.
