Spanish sensations confirmed for Santos Tour Down Under
04 January 2013
Spanish brothers Gorka and Jon Izaguirre will combine to tackle the 15th Santos Tour Down Under when cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi arrives in South Australia this month.
Comprising six Spanish riders and French cyclist Juan José Oroz, Euskatel-Euskadi will hit the road to try and stake its claim on the first UCI WorldTour event for 2013.
The Santos Tour Down Under will see 2003 overall winner Mikel Astarloza return to the start line.
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur said the team featured several young riders who would be eager to hold their own among the more experienced competitors.
“The younger riders in Euskaltel-Euskadi will be put through their paces but also have more experienced team members including 2003 Santos Tour Down Under winner Mikel Astarloza to mentor them through the stages,” Mr Turtur said.
“Next month’s race features an equal spread of stages to suit sprinters and all-rounders, so Euskaltel-Euskadi’s riders will have the chance to experience all elements of the event.”
Youngster Jon Izaguirre won his first professional race in April and went on to make a solo breakaway and win the Giro d’Italia’s 16th stage later in the year.
Mr Turtur said he was looking forward to welcoming Euskaltel-Euskadi back to South Australia to compete in the 15th Santos Tour Down Under.
“The 2013 race includes new challenges for our elite cyclists who will put on a great show for fans from Australia and around the world,” he said.
The Euskaltel-Euskadi team for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Team Manager Alex Diaz (ESP) and includes riders Gorka and Jon Izaguirre (ESP), Jon Aberasturi (ESP), Juan Jose Lobato (ESP), Garikoitz Bravo (ESP), Mikel Astarloza (ESP) and Juan Jose Oroz (FRA).
The Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 20-27 January 2013.
