05 January 2013
Slovak all-rounder Peter Velits is a member of the strong Omega Pharma-Quick Step team heading to the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under.
Gert Steegmans and Bert Grabsch are also in the team for the first race of the UCI WorldTour season.
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur said he looked forward to seeing Omega Pharma-Quick Step in action.
“This is definitely a team to watch and it will be interesting to see how riders handle the challenges of this month’s race,” said Turtur.
“The 2013 Santos Tour Down Under route is a good match for all-rounders such as Velits, whose excellent season last year included victories in the Tour of Oman and the time trial at the Slovakian National Championships.”
Czech cyclist František Rabon, a multiple national time trial champion, and French classics specialist Jérôme Pineau will also represent Omega Pharma-Quick Step. Serge Pauwels returns to Adelaide, possibly with an eye on reclaiming the ŠKODA King of the Mountain crown he won In 2007.
“We are celebrating 15 years of the Santos Tour Down Under and look forward to welcoming all the teams to South Australia,” said Turtur.
“This event is always hotly contested and I know thousands of fans will be cheering on the riders as they challenge for early season points.”
The Omega Pharma-Quick Step team will be led by Team Manager Rik Van Slycke and includes riders Andrew Fenn (GBR), Bert Grabsch (GER), Serge Pauwels (BEL), Jérôme Pineau (FRA), František Rabon (CZE), Gert Steegmans (BEL) and Peter Velits (SVK).
