The transformation of Adelaide’s new-look Victoria Square into a hub for the Santos Tour Down Under begins today.
Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said the upgraded square would once again be home to the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo.
“All eyes have been on Victoria Square in recent months as its redevelopment progressed, and next month it will welcome the colour and excitement of the Santos Tour Down Under,” he said.
Staff will today start building the marquees and structures the square will house throughout January.
The Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo – which will officially open on Saturday January 18 at 3.00 pm – covers both sides of Victoria Square, and will be bigger and better than ever.
27 exhibitors will be located on the northern side of the square, while 24 sponsors will showcase their products in the village on the southern side.
Cycling fans are also encouraged to head to the square to see team mechanics in action, watch race coverage on the big screen, have a drink, get autographs and enjoy the atmosphere.
“Earlier this year an estimated 50,000 people visited the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo, including thousands of interstate and overseas visitors embracing all South Australia has to offer,” Mr Bignell said.
“Victoria Square is an asset for Adelaide and it’s known and loved by the riders who compete in the Santos Tour Down Under and the tens of thousands of fans who enjoy the event each year.”
All riders competing in the Santos Tour Down Under will be introduced to fans in Victoria Square by renowned cycling commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen on Saturday 18 January from 6pm.
Australian electro and dance trio The Potbelleez will get the party started following the team presentations with a free concert in Victoria Square.
The Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 19-26 January 2014.
