Responsible Nature-based Tourism Strategy 2004-2009
South Australia’s Responsible Nature-based Tourism Strategy takes a realistic look at the opportunities and challenges in nature-based tourism in this State and seeks alliances and benefits beyond tourism itself. The Strategy is concerned with how we care for and present our natural environment for people to enjoy and learn from. It seeks to derive tourism benefits from the environment (income, jobs, sustainable regional communities) while providing benefits for the environment (generation of revenue for its protection and management, and environmental ‘education’). This is a joint South Australian Tourism Commission and Department for Environment and Heritage strategy developed in conjunction with other partners that share these aims. It represents an exciting opportunity for SA to achieve a highly differentiated position in the competitive world of tourism and at the same time benefit our natural environment.

Tourism Optimisation Management Model (TOMM)
A program developed by a range of tourism industry stakeholders that is designed to assess, monitor and manage the long-term health of tourism destinations. In this model, future scenarios are examined and local communities are engaged in a process to consider what desirable economic, marketing, environmental, community, visitor experience, and infrastructure development conditions they wish to see. The process also identifies what needs to be monitored (and the acceptable ranges of these performance indicators) to determine if they are achieving these desirable conditions. This innovative program is currently being applied to tourism activity on Kangaroo Island. For more information about TOMM please visit www.tomm.info.
